The idea was that art can promote healing and hope. And when University Health System made the decision to incorporate art into every facet of the new million-square-foot Sky Tower at University Hospital, and the expansion of the historic Robert B. Green Campus downtown, they brought in San Antonio curator Allison Hays Lane to lead a committee of staff, members of the Board of Managers, community leaders and art professionals to pick more than 1,500 original works of art and design enhancements from artists around the globe.
The Salud-Arte: Art of Healing program has generated both praise and awe, transforming the Sky Tower, which opened in April 2014; and the new clinical building at the Robert B. Green Campus, which opened the year before; from attractive, modern spaces into works of art in their entirety.
In this interview in San Antonio Women magazine, Ms. Lane recounts the three-year process of acquiring all those pieces, and her personal journey along the way.
